Total S.A. (TOT) said Tuesday that two people died and one was missing after an explosion at its refinery in Antwerp , Belgium .

The refinery has been evacuated while the site of the explosion is being secured, the group said.

Total said the explosion happened around 1400 GMT. Both victims worked for a subcontractor of the French oil and gas major, Total said.

A spokeswoman for the
Port of Antwerp said the incident won't affect the environment and Europe 's second biggest port remains open as usual to shipping traffic.

"Part of the installation on the refinery is shut down and the whole place has been evacuated," said Annik Dirkx, press officer for the
Port of Antwerp . "It was only steam released, so there are no consequences whatsoever for the environment."

The oil and gas industry has moved to invest in and tighten security systems ever since BP PLC's deadly explosion at the Macondo oil well in the
Gulf of Mexico in 2010.
