Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told reporters Monday he thinks
Russian state-controlled gas giant OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) and China National
Petroleum Corp., or CNPC, should strike a long-awaited gas deal soon, Prime
news agency reported.
"I'm still optimistic," Mr. Novak was quoted by the agency as saying.
"But I think if it won't happen in December they will probably reach an
agreement in the nearest future," he added.
Mr. Novak said last month that he expected the two companies to reach a final
gas supply agreement by the end of the year.
Gazprom had already signed some initial agreements for supplying 38 billion
cubic meters of gas a year to CNPC, but a final agreement is pending. Gazprom
said in September that the two companies had agreed on the route of supplies,
the level of guaranteed volumes CNPC must pay for, and the speed at which
supplies will be ramped up.
