policy are the major subjects on which IENE’s 18th National Energy Conference
"Energy and Development 2013” Conference will focus on. This year’s
"Energy and Development” (Athens, 3-4 December, 2013), to be held under
the auspices of Greece’s Ministry for Environment, Energy & Climate Change,
will focus on the "Sustainability and Security of Greece’s Energy System”,
reflecting the ongoing diminishing support in the funding of RES in the country
and the European Union in general, due to Eurozone’s recession and restrictive
fiscal policies, combined with the recent emphasis on research in the upstream
sector in the wider SE Europe and the East Mediterranean region.
Mr. Ioannis Maniatis, Greece’s Minister for Environment, Energy & Climate
Change, will be the keynote speaker in the opening session of the IENE’s
"Energy and Development 2013" annual conference. In his speech, Mr.
Maniatis is expectedto underline Greece’s emerging role for Europe’s energy
security and its growing importance as a regional energy bridge and prospective
gas supplier.
Senior executives from well-known international energy organizations and
institutes will highlight the changes now taking place on the current agenda,
both at a European and global level. More specifically, Dr. Fabian Kesicki,
Energy Analyst at the Directorate of Global Energy Economics of the
International Energy Agency (ΙΕΑ, Paris), Dr. Leo Drolas, Executive Director of
the London-based CGES Institute, one of the most prestigious think tanks on
energy at an international level, and Prof. Uwe Leprich of the Germany’s
influential Institute for Future Energy Systems (IZES), will provide analysis
on several aspects of international energy developments in this established
annual IENE event. Finally, Mr. Costis Stambolis, the Institute’s Executive
Director, will describe Greece’s importance as an emerging supply corridor for
European energy needs.
As energy-related investments are expected to play a crucial role Greece’s
economic recovery, IENE’s conference will focus on electricity, natural gas,
oil and energy efficiency as the most promising forms of energy. Mr. Harry G.
Sachinis, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of DEPA S.A., Mr. Mathios
Rigas, Chairman and CEO of Energean Oil & Gas SA and Mr. Dimitrios

speakers who will refer to several aspects of Greece’s energy investment

Additionally, a Round Table Discussion on energy and foreign policy will be
held as part of the conference. The discussion is to be coordinated by one of
the Greece’s better known geopolitical analysts, Dr. Ioannis Th. Mazis,
Professor of Economic Geography (Dept of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies,
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) with the participation of
academics experts, and professionals from the country’s energy sector and also
of representatives of Greek political parties.
