Tobruk port may resume soon after a tanker--the first in months--was nominated
to load crude from there, Libyan officials said Thursday.
The first shipment would be a rare piece of good news for
Libya
's
embattled oil sector, which exports have reduced to a trickle after armed
protesters blocked its Eastern ports this summer.
A tanker has been named to load and is waiting to enter the terminal situated
in Marsa al-Hariga near Tobruk, as officials check it is safe to load, one
official said. The port's equipment hasn't been used for months and needs to be
tested for possible technical faults, he said
But another official said the government wanted to ensure a militia that has
opposed the reopening of the ports wouldn't block the loading.
The militia led by Ibrahim al-Jathran, which is seeking a greater share of oil
revenue for Libya's three main provinces, has its stronghold in the central
eastern part of Libya, while Marsa al-Hariga is to its Far East. The distance
has allowed Marsa al-Hariga's refinery to restart production recently.
