Eni SpA (E) is studying the possibility of supplying Europe with Turkmenistan natural gas via Turkey , said Paolo Scaroni Tuesday, as Italy 's biggest energy company by revenue aims to secure closer links with the hydrocarbon-rich Caspian country.

Eni is studying at a very preliminary level a project that will allow Turkmenistan gas to reach Europe through Turkey, said the chief executive office in a speech at a conference in Rome.

Turkey is becoming a "key" country in new gas routes to Europe , said CEO Scaroni in his speech, adding that the European Commission should keep this in mind when drawing up its energy plans.

Last week, Eni said it will study with
Turkmenistan the possibility of exporting gas from the Caspian country as part of an accord signed between the two in Rome .

It was too early to say if this entailed pipelines or liquefied natural gas as the sides still needed to "study" the issue, Scaroni said last week.
