French power operator GDF Suez (GSZ.FR) is expected to receive approval to develop two shale gas fields in Southern France in "few weeks time," the group's senior vice-president for exploration and production, Didier Holleaux, said Thursday.

Speaking during an oil conference in Paris , Holleaux said that unconventional gas was a "new frontier" for the oil and gas industry.

"We believe that there is still some potential still to be assessed" in Europe , Holleaux said.
