The United Nations Security Council may take up the issue of sanctions against Iran in the "very near future," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday according to the RIA Novosti news agency.

"In the absence of co-operation on the part of Iran, it is quite possible that sanctions will become inevitable, and in the very near future the Security Council will deal with these matters," Lavrov is reported to have said in Strasbourg, France.
