An investigation begun after 3,500 litres of oil were found into the river Usk in Wales. According to Wales Online, nearby gardens have been affected and there are some reports of dead fish surfacing on the water.

Officers have identified the source of the pollution in the Cwm Beth tributary, but the oil has since worked its way downstream to affect the main River Usk.

Rhys Hughes, from Natural Resources Wales, said: “We are doing all we can to stop the pollution and to reduce its impact on fish and other wildlife which depend on it, as well as the local community who are being affected. Our officers have already spotted a few dead fish in the river, but we’re expecting to see more as the pollution moves through the system.

Local assembly member Kirsty Williams told the Guardian: “This wonderful river and its wildlife are incredibly important to our town…Of course, the clean-up of the area must be our number one priority. Following that, we must also determine how badly our wildlife has been affected. It is sad to hear that dead fish have already been found. We all must offer our support to Natural Resources Wales as they work to minimise damage in this beautiful area.”

River Usk is considered on one of Wale’s finest river and many fishermen enjoy fishing salmon and trout on the river. South Wales Argus reported on 12 February, that the right to fish for salmon and trout on the River Usk at Abergavenny is up for sale, having been in the same ownership for three generations.
