Oil-rich Kazakhstan seeks to impose customs duties on exports of crude oil and oil products by next year, Kazakh Energy Minister Sauat Mynbayev said Tuesday.
Mynbayev said at a government meeting that the customs duties on exports of crude oil and oil products produced by companies which aren't guaranteed stability in their customs payments should be introduced by January 2009, a report on the government Web site states.
Mynbayev said the government would also hold talks with those energy companies that are guaranteed stability in their customs payments on possibly introducing new duties.
Mynbayev didn't specify possible amounts of custom duties that might be imposed on oil and gas companies operating in Kazakhstan. He said the introduction of such duties may hinder Kazakhstan's attempts to join the World Trade Organization.
Natural resource-rich Kazakhstan has toughened its stance toward oil and gas companies, among which are major energy companies such as Chevron Corp.
(CVX), ExxonMobil Corp.
(XOM) and Eni SpA (E), which operate in this former Soviet republic.
