Turkey's Bosporus and Dardanelles straits are both closed to tanker traffic due poor visibility caused by dense fog, Turkish maritime officials said Tuesday, the Ihlas News Agency, or IHA, reported.
A Coastal Safety official said the Bosporus Strait was closed to both north- and southbound traffic from 1700 GMT Monday and the Dardanelles Strait was also closed in both directions from 1935 GMT Monday.
The spokesman said the straits would resume shipping and tanker traffic as soon as weather conditions return to normal.
The two straits, the only sea routes between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean and an important sea-route for tankers carrying Russian and Caspian oil from the Black Sea ports to international markets, are often closed in winter due to winds, snow and fog.
