South East Europe Energy Dialogue Attracts Strong International Interest

More than 80 speakers from 20 counties and 7 International Organizations are expected to participate in this year’s SE Europe Energy Dialogue alongside with many delegates from Greece and abroad. This year’s Dialogue meeting is convened by the Institute of Energy for South East Europe (IENE) following the success of the 1st Energy Dialogue, which was organised in Thessaloniki last year.

More than 80 speakers from 20 counties and 7 International Organizations are expected to participate in this year’s SE Europe Energy Dialogue alongside with many delegates from Greece and abroad. This year’s Dialogue meeting is convened by the Institute of Energy for South East Europe (IENE) following the success of the 1st Energy Dialogue, which was organised in Thessaloniki last year.

The 2nd SE Europe Energy Dialogue is being held again in Thessaloniki on May 21-22, at the Makedonia Palace Hotel. The purpose of this international convention is to bring together high-ranking government officials, senior business executives and energy experts from the countries of S.E. Europe but also from oil and gas producers with the objective of exchanging information and ideas, networking and discussions on the shaping of the political action required in order to face the energy and environmental challenges of the region. The “Energy Dialogue” has been conceived as a forum for furthering the idea of a S.E. European energy bridge, involving all the countries of the region.

This year’s conference is organised in partnership with the World Energy Council (WEC) and under the auspices of the Ministry of Development of Greece. The Minister himself, Mr. Christos Folias will be the invited speaker at the official conference dinner. Also, USA’s Ambassador to Greece Mr. Daniel Speckhard will speak over lunch on May 21st.
Other keynote speakers in this year’s SE Europe Energy dialogue include: Mr. Fabrizio Barbaso, Deputy Director General of DG TREN at the European Commission in Brussels, the president of the Technical Chamber of Greece, Mr. Yiannis Alavanos, the president of Greece’s National Energy Strategy Council Dr. Raphael Moissis, the Deputy Chairman of PPC Prof. Nicholas Hatziargiriou, the president of Brussels based Europia Dr. Panos Cavoulacos, the CEO of Hellenic Petroleum SA Mr. John Costopoulos, the chairman of the Tehran based International Institute for Caspian Studies, Dr. Abbas Maleki, the director of IEA’s international energy dialogue, Mr. Tim Gould, the Romanian MP in charge of the Energy Committee of the parliament, Dr. Julian Iancu, the senior adviser to the Minister of Economy and Energy of Bulgaria, Mr. Henry Donchev, the CEO of the Albanian Electricity Authority KESH, Mr. Gjergji Bohaxhi, the MD of EGL Hellas, Mr. Elias Karydogiannis and several others.

The South East Europe Energy Dialogue is sponsored by several leading Greek and international energy companies. In addition to the official representatives from each of the SE Europe countries, executives of banks and major financial organizations (i.e. World Bank, Black Sea Development Bank, etc.) donor organizations as well as officials from the European Commission, the International Energy Agency, the Energy Charter and other international bodies will participate.

Conference sponsors include Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC), EGL Hellas and Terna Energy. The Dialogue is further supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Endesa, PPC Renewables SA and the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE).
