German discount airline Air Berlin PLC (AB1.XE) said Friday it doesn't plan to cancel routes due to higher fuel costs.

Such steps aren't planned at present, Air Berlin spokeswoman Alexandra Mueller said Friday. She said higher oil prices are being offset by a passenger fuel surcharge.

Air Berlin, Germany's second-biggest airline, increased its surcharge May 16. For domestic flights and flights within Europe, the surcharge was increased by EUR4 to EUR22. For flights to Mallorca, the surcharge rose by EUR4 to EUR32. For longer flights, such as to the Canaries, the charge rose by EUR5 to EUR40. And for long-haul flights to the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico and China, the charge rose by EUR5 to EUR85.

The spokeswoman declined to say whether the recent fuel surcharge increases are sufficient, or how costs might affect results. She said the company will present first-quarter results May 29 and company management is expected to elaborate on market conditions.
