The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe Thursday said it wanted to intensify its cooperation with Turkmenistan in an attempt to promote reforms and stability in the gas-rich former Soviet republic.

"I believe we can work together to further support the much-needed reform process in all dimensions of security, particularly with respect to human rights, democracy and rule of law," said Alexander Stubb, the foreign minister of Finland which currently holds the OSCE chairmanship.

"In my meetings, I was encouraged to hear about Turkmenistan's recent efforts to reform its legislation," Stubb added in a statement following meetings in the central Asian country with President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and head of parliament Akja Nurberdiyeva.

The European security body stands "ready to assist with legislative reforms," he said.

He also said border security was a priority in the region and encouraged the Turkmen government to "enhance engagement with Afghanistan" on the issue.
