IENEs «Energy Week» To Focus On Crucial Energy Issues

Organized for the second consecutive year by the Institute of Energy for South‑East Europe (IENE), the «Energy Week ‘08» will begin on Monday, November 10, and will end on the afternoon of Friday, November 14. Held under the auspices and with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Development, the event will be attended by members of the Greek government, opposition party delegates, representatives of bodies, agencies and administrative organizations, experts of international standing and leading operators from the energy field, from both Greece and abroad.

Organized for the second consecutive year by the Institute of Energy for South‑East Europe (IENE), the «Energy Week ‘08» will begin on Monday, November 10, and will end on the afternoon of Friday, November 14. Held under the auspices and with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Development, the event will be attended by members of the Greek government, opposition party delegates, representatives of bodies, agencies and administrative organizations, experts of international standing and leading operators from the energy field, from both Greece and abroad.

The important processes presently in progress both in Europe and on an international level, and which are expected to define the new energy landscape of the next decade, will be at the centre of the numerous contributions, analyses, presentations and discussions.

The following events will take place in the context of the five-day Energy Week:

• the Annual 13th National Conference - «Energy & Development 2008» (12-13/11 - Evgenides Foundation)

• 3 One-day Thematic Conferences

· «Energy & Foreign Policy» (10/11 - J. Kranidiotis Auditorium, Ministry of · Foreign Affairs), under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

· «Green» Transport (11/11 - Evgenides Foundation), under the auspices of · the Ministry of Transport & Communications

· «Energy Conservation for Buildings» (14/11 - Evgenides Foundation), in · collaboration with the Technical Chamber of Greece

• Exhibition on «Energy Technologies» (11-14/11 - Evgenides Foundation)

• Workshop on Photovoltaics

· «Development of Photovoltaic Applications» (12/11 - Evgenides Foundation)

The minister of Development, Mr. Christos Folias, has been invited to officially inaugurate the proceedings of the 2nd Energy Week (Monday, November 10, 09:30am, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, G. Kranidiotis Auditorium). His speech will be followed by an address made by Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis, secretary general of International Economic Relations at the ministry, after an introductory speech by IENE's chairman, Mr. Konstantinos Maniatopoulos, while a presentation will also be made by the Ministry of Development's special secretary, Ms. Elissavet Loverdou.

The proceedings of the one-day conference on «Green Transport» will begin with an inaugural speech by the minister of Transport, Mr Costis Hadzidakis (Tuesday 11/11, 16:00, Evgenides Foundation).

Party representatives are expected to participate with substantial interventions. On behalf of the main opposition party, Mr. Michalis Chrysochoïdis, former minister and presently MP & head of PASOK's Development Sector, will address the current energy developments (Wednesday 12/11, 09:30).

The Public Power Corporation's chairman and managing director, Prof. Panayotis Athanassopoulos, is the invited speaker at the conference's official luncheon (Thursday 13/11, 13:30), while the speaker at the Conference's official dinner will be Prof. Ioannis Stournaras, scientific director of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) (Wednesday 12/11, 21:00). Speeches, contributions and presentations will also be made by Messrs. Raphael Moïses, chairman of the Council of National Energy Strategy (SEES); Dr Evanghelos Lekatsas, chairman of the Hellenic Electricity Transmission Operator (HTSO); Prof. Nikos Stathopoulos, chairman of TRAM SA, Konstantinos Maroulis, general director of Transmission-Administrative and Finance at the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA); Christos Dimas, managing director of HELPE-THRACE SA; Sotiris Kapellos, treasurer-member of the Board and chairman of the Hellenic Association of Photovoltaic Companies (HELAPCO); Eleni Despotou, general secretary of ΕΡΙΑ (Brussels); Anastassios Garis, managing director of PPC‑Renewables SA.; Thanos Dokos, general director of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP); Dimitris Beïs, scientific secretary of SEES, and others.

The “Global Oil Market Review” presentation will be made by Dr. Leo Drollas, deputy executive director of CGES, London. The International Energy Agency's “World Energy Outlook” will be presented by Mr. Bertrand Magne, energy analyst, IEA, Paris, while the European Commission's positions on environment issues will be presented by Dr. Lev Klaassen from the EU's Environment Directorate.

It is also worth noting the participation of outstanding Greek and foreign University professors, researchers-experts and managerial executives from energy groups and companies. Among others, these include: Prof. Arthouros Zervos, NTUA - chairman of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA); Prof. Pantelis Capros, NTUA; Prof. Dimitris Lalas, Dr. Nikos Vassilakos, chairman of EREF; Prof. Nickolas Hadziargyriou, deputy chairman of the Public Power Corporation (PPC). The sessions of the 2nd Energy Week will be coordinated by Mr. Costis Stambolis, IENE's Executive Director Manager, Mr. Yannis Chadjivassiliadis, chairman of IENE's RES Committee, and Professor Pantelis Capros, chairman of IENE's Scientific Committee.
