French power and rail engineering group Alstom SA (1022047.FR) said Monday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Polish utility group PGE Elekrownia Belchatow SA to develop and implement carbon capture and storage technology.
The technology will be installed at the Belchatow electric power plant in Poland. Terms weren't disclosed.
Alstom will design and construct a pilot carbon capture plant at the existing Unit 12 at Belchatow. The two companies will jointly operate the carbon capture facility, which is expected to go online by mid-2011.
The facility is set to capture about 100,000 metric tons of C02 a year.
In a second phase, Alstom and PGE will build a larger carbon capture and storage facility for a 858 megawatt, lignite-fired power unit currently being built for PGE. That unit will go online by 2015, Alstom said.
