Gazprom chief executive Alexey Miller visited Sofia on February 16 to meet Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Economy Minister Traycho Traykov to discuss measures that would speed up the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline.

The feasibility study for South Stream should be completed by October 2010, Miller was quoted as saying.

With current gas delivery deals set to expire, the two sides have agreed to begin negotiations on the new contract, the Government press service said in a statement.

The gas delivery contract was discussed during Miller's meeting with Purvanov, who once again asked for the deal to be signed directly with Gazprom rather than intermediaries that are partially owned by the Russian gas firm.

Miller said that Gazprom agreed in principle, the presidency said in a statement.
