German flagship airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA.XE) plans to use
renewable fuel on its regular route between
Hamburg
and
Frankfurt
for a
period of six months as of April 2011, the company said Monday during a
presentation of the project in
Berlin
.
The aircraft on the route--an Airbus A321--will use a blend of 50% renewable
jet fuel and 50% fossil-based jet fuel in one engine, while the other engine
will use conventional jet fuel.
Lufthansa's flight program is part of a development project supported by the
German Ministry of Economics and Technology that in addition to Lufthansa
involves companies such as MTU AG (MTU.XE) and Deutsche Airbus as well as a
number of universities.
The goal of the project is to examine the effects of bio fuel on maintenance
and life time of engines. A total of 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide are set to be
economized during the six months.
Lufthansa would be the first airline to use bio fuel in air operations as part
of a longer test. The airline said it expects a total cost of EUR6.6 million.
