Russia-based integrated oil and gas company Lukoil Holdings (LUKOY) is likely to bid for an exploration license in Uganda when the country opens a licensing round later this year, a company executive told Dow Jones Newswires Thursday.

Natalia Chekhronova, a senior advisor with Lukoil's public relations
department, said the company has been encouraged by recent oil discoveries in
Uganda
as
well as the country's investor-friendly policies.
"Our projects in
Africa
are currently in
West
Africa
but we are also looking at opportunities in
East
Africa
, particularly in
Uganda
,"
she said on the sidelines of the East African Petroleum Conference here.
In February last year, Andrei Sapozhnikov, Lukoil's vice president, visited
Uganda and offered an investment proposal to the Ugandan President Yoweri
Museveni in the country's oil sector, the Ugandan presidency said at the time.
