Abengoa SA (ABG.MC) will bid for solar projects under
India
's
federal program, a company executive of the company's Indian engineering unit
said Thursday.
Abengoa wants entry into the South Asian country's renewable energy sector
through this bidding process, Vivek Shah, deputy general manager of business
development at Abener Engineering Pvt. Ltd. told Dow Jones Newswires.
"We had bid in the initial rounds of the National Solar Mission but did
not get anything," he added.
The program aims to set up 20 gigawatts of solar power generation capacity by
2022.
Shiv Shukla, president of Abengoa Solar India, said that the Spanish
engineering and renewable energy company in the long-term wants to develop
plants in
India
at
different locations.
"One of them [locations] is Rajasthan and the other is
Gujarat
,"
Shukla said.
Abengoa Solar builds and operates solar power plants and operates mainly in the
concentrated solar power, or solar thermal, segment. Abener Engineering
provides industrial and engineering services to the power sector, such as
feasibility studies and plant optimization.
Earlier this year Abengoa signed an agreement with Bharat Heavy Electricals
Ltd. (500103.BY) to bid for the construction of solar power plants in
India
.
"The idea of the joint venture is to reduce costs as much as possible
through localization," Shukla said at the RenewCon Solar India 2011
conference of UBM [United Business Media Ltd.].
Shukla said Abengoa is currently implementing a wait-and-watch strategy in
India
and
is trying to bring down the cost of setting up projects.
