Japan will depend more on thermo power generation "for a
while" after it reduced output of electricity from its nuclear reactors as
a consequence of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster, Trade and Industry Minister
Yukio Edano said Tuesday.
Edano said his government is looking with interest at shale-gas developments in
Australia
and
elsewhere, as a way to increase
Japan
's
power generation capacity.
Japan
will
also encourage energy savings and a wider use of renewable energy sources,
Edano said.
The Japanese government ordered the shutdown of many nuclear reactors after the
Fukushima Daiichi disaster causing difficulties in energy supply. The
government now aims to bring about the restart of idled reactors after ensuring
their safety and obtaining the approval of local residents.
