Total SA (TOT) Thursday sent a specialized crew by helicopter on a reconnaissance mission to the Elgin platform in the North Sea that it was forced to abandon and power down 11 days ago due to a major gas leak.

The helicopter took off from
Aberdeen
,
Scotland
, at
0930 GMT "with the objective of landing on the Elgin Process Utilities
Quarters," Total said in a brief statement.
Elgin
's PUQ is adjacent to the wellhead platform.
If they are able to land on the platform, the crew will "perform a
reconnaissance mission" of the
Elgin
wellhead platform and the gas-leaking well identified as the G4 well "if
it is safe to do so," Total said.
The company didn't elaborate on other tasks the specialized crew might
undertake, such as if they would try to secure the entire structure.
At 0950 GMT, shares in Total were down 0.7% at EUR37.75 in line with the CAC-40
benchmark index which as also down 0.7%.
