Bulgaria will apply for about 45 million euro ($56 million) in financing for energy efficiency projects from the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund (KIDSF), the CEO of nuclear power plant Kozloduy said.

The projects have to be approved by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) which administers the fund, Valentin Nikolov told reporters on the sidelines of an international nuclear energy conference organised by local lobby group Bulatom that is underway at the Riviera sea resort.

Nikolov, together with Bulgarian energy minister Delyan Dobrev, will meet with officials from the EBRD in London on Thursday.

About 11 million euro from the funds will be used for energy efficient street lighting in 14 municipalities, while the remainder will be spent on retrofitting university, hospital, school and other public buildings.

The KIDSF fund, established in 2001, supports projects to reform and modernise both the supply and demand side of energy use in Bulgaria. It was set up under a framework agreement between the EBRD and the Bulgarian government.
