Nuclearelectrica [BSE:SNN], the operator of Romania's sole nuclear power
plant Cernavoda, said on Friday it had to disconnect one of the plant's two
units from the grid due to damage to a power line caused by bad weather.
"SN Nuclearelectrica SA announces that Cernavpda NPP Unit 1 was
disconnected from the National Power Grid, due to external causes, during the
morning of January 6th 2017, 08:25 hours, due to disturbances in the power
evacuation line of 400 Kv, belonging to the grid operator,"
Nuclearelectrica said. "This disturbance, caused by the unfavourable
weather conditions in the area, led to the automated disconnection of Unit ’s 1
turbogenerator from the National Power Grid, the reactor remaining at a low
operating power."
"The systems of the power plant are functioning in compliance with the
project and there is no impact on the nuclear safety of the reactor,
operational personnel, population and environment," Nuclearelectrica also
said.
Unit 1 was again disconnected from the grid in November due to damage to a
power line caused by bad weather. The outage lasted three days.
Nuclearelectrica said in December it plans to invest 287.3 million lei ($66
million/63 million euro) in 2017, mainly in the maintenance and upgrade of the
two nuclear reactors.
The company also said it plans to complete studies on extending the life of
Unit 1 by re-tubing and by upgrading its main systems.
