Italian renewable energy
company Enel has launched operations of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects in
Brazil totaling 546 megawatts, the company announced Monday.
A new 254-megawatt plant,
Ituverava and the 292-megawatt Nova Olinda solar park are South America’s
largest PV facilities currently in operation, according to the company's press
release.
The company proclaimed that
it invested approximately $300 million for the construction of Nova Olinda
while the Ituverava solar plant required an investment of around $400 million,
the press release said.
According to the company's
press release, both solar parks are supported by a 20-year power purchase
agreement (PPA) with the Brazilian Chamber of Commercialization of Electric
Energy.
"The start of operations of
Nova Olinda and Ituverava is a major milestone for our presence in Brazil since
it confirms our leadership in the country’s photovoltaic market, as well as our
commitment and ability to quickly and efficiently deliver the projects we are
awarded” Head of Enel Green Power Antonio Cammisecra said in the press release.
In Brazil, the Enel Group,
through its subsidiaries EGPB and Enel Brasil, has a total installed renewable
capacity of around 2,276 megawatts. Out of this capacity, 670 megawatts comes
from wind power, 716 megawatts from solar PV and 890 megawatts from hydropower.
Furthermore, close to 275 megawatts of capacity is currently under
construction, of which wind will generate 272 megawatts and solar will produce
103 megawatts.
