Manuel Pizarro, former head of Spanish utility Endesa SA (ELEYY), has joined Spain's opposition Popular Party ahead of March 9 general elections, the PP said late Monday.

Spanish newspapers reported Tuesday Pizarro would become Spain's finance minister if the PP wins the elections. Recent polls show the PP and the ruling Socialist party in a virtual dead heat.

Pizarro was the chairman of Endesa during a drawn-out, highly political takeover battle for the electricity company, which ended last year. He is currently a board member of Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica SA (TEF).
