BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--The European Commission Thursday cleared electricity grid operators in five countries to form a single transmission joint venture.

The venture is in line with the commission's long-stated goal of boosting cross-border cooperation in Europe's power market.

The project, called CASC, will span Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany and the Netherlands. The companies involved are: Elia System Operator SA (ELI.BT) in Belgium, Cedegel Net SA in Luxembourg, Electricite de France SA (1024251.FR), TenneT TSO in the Netherlands, and RWE AG (RWE.XE), E.ON AG (EOAN.XE) and EnBW AG (EBK.XE) in Germany.
