Taiwan said Friday it would spend about $100 million to promote environmentally friendly buildings in a bid to cut carbon emissions and create jobs.

The six-year initiative is estimated to attract additional investments of NT$28.4 billion ($922 million) and help create an industry worth NT$752.9 billion, the cabinet said.

The program is also expected to create 243,000 new jobs, as the authorities would subsidize private builders that incorporate energy saving and other environmental concepts into their projects, it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, new public construction projects that cost more than NT$50 million dollars are required to go green.

Taiwan is eager to promote green technology and architecture as it seeks to reduce carbon emissions.
