Americans in Kuwait were warned Tuesday of possible attacks after the
authorities last week busted an Al-Qaeda-linked cell allegedly plotting
to attack U.S. targets.
"There are indications that terrorist groups seek to
continue attacks against U.S. interests in the Middle East, including
Kuwait," said a message issued by the State Department and circulated
by the U.S. embassy in Kuwait.
"American citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of
vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security
awareness," it said.
It also advised American citizens living or travelling in Kuwait to register with the embassy.
Last week, Kuwait said it has foiled an attack by suspected
Al-Qaeda militants on the main U.S. military base in the Gulf emirate,
the first such incident in four years.
Security forces have arrested six Kuwaitis who were planning
to attack Camp Arifjan, state security offices and other government
buildings, according to an interior ministry statement.
A U.S. Defence Department spokesman in Washington confirmed
that U.S. forces in Kuwait were targeted for attack but said it was
unclear if the suspects were linked to Al-Qaeda or that they planned to
strike at Camp Arifjan.
