The European Union is unlikely to face new gas problems with Ukraine and Russia in September, E.U. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs told the European Parliament Wednesday.
The European Union is unlikely to face new gas problems with Ukraine and Russia in September, E.U. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs told the European Parliament Wednesday.

"[Ukraine's gas company] Naftogaz has so far been able to meet its payment obligations towards OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS)," the Russian energy giant, Piebalgs said, adding that he doesn't expect anything to happen in September.

He warned, however, that the European Commission will continue to be vigilant because relations between Russia and Ukraine "contain structural loopholes."

Last January, a payment dispute between the two countries disrupted gas supplies to Europe for weeks, as most of the gas the E.U. imports from Russia flows through Ukraine.
