BP PLC (BP) should be able to capture up to 10,000 barrels a day more of
the oil leaking into the
Gulf of Mexico
within a week with the deployment of a second system attached to the well head,
Senior Vice President Kent Wells said Thursday.
The current system that is funneling oil from the lower marine riser package
attached to the top of the well to be stored aboard the Discoverer Enterprise
can process up to 18,000 barrels of oil a day, Wells said. It is difficult to
maintain this level for an extended period and BP collected 15,800 barrels of
oil Wednesday, he said.
A second system to collect up to an extra 10,000 barrels of oil a day from
hoses connected to the blowout preventer atop the well and burn it off on board
the Q4000 vessel could be in place as early as Monday, he said.
BP is also looking at other options for longer-term capture and storage of the
oil, he said, without going into more detail.
BP has captured 73,000 barrels of oil aboard the Discoverer Enterprise in the
last six days, he said.
