Bulgaria is interested in carrying out major energy projects as long as they are financially viable and meeting all security requirements, said late on Wednesday in Moscow Energy Minister Traicho Traikov at a meeting of the Bulgarian-Russian intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific and technical cooperation.

"Concerning NPP Belene we've noticed the two sides are interested in finding solution to certain issues still under discussion," Minister Traikov told journalists.In his words, the Russian side expressed understanding of Bulgaria's demand for meeting the highest standards for nuclear safety.

On his behalf, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko pointed out NPP Belene could only be built provided all of Bulgaria's economic interests were taken into account. In Moscow, Bulgaria and Russia signed a memorandum for cooperation between small and medium-sized businesses.
