French Energy Minister Eric Besson Monday said his planned visit to
shale gas extraction operations in the
U.S.
or
Sweden
was
called into question after the government said shale gas exploration and
extraction in
France
could
simply be forbidden by law.
Besson told a press conference he was expecting very soon a preliminary report
on the potential environmental impact from shale gas and oil exploration and
extraction.
The government issued in March a moratorium on shale gas exploration and
extraction in
France
after
a huge outcry from environmentalists and communities where potential fields in
southern
France
have
been identified.
Last week,
France
's
Prime Minister Francois Fillon said that a bill to outright ban shale gas
extraction and exploration in
France
,
pushed by the head of the ruling party UMP Christian Jacob, a former farmer,
would soon be discussed by the French parliament.
The debate should take place around May 10, Besson said Monday.
