RWE AG's (RWE.XE) Chief Executive Juergen Grossmann has warned that the
German utility may not reach its carbon dioxide emissions targets without
nuclear power plants, monthly magazine Capital reports Monday.
"To put it bluntly: we couldn't meet our emissions targets without nuclear
power," Grossmann is quoted as saying in excerpts of an interview to be
published Wednesday.
RWE--
Europe
's single largest emitter of CO2--aims to reduce
emissions to around 450 grams per kilowatt-hour of electricity produced. In
2010 the company emitted some 165 million metric tons of CO2.
Grossmann's comments come as the German government reconsiders the use of
atomic energy for power generation, with Chancellor Angela Merkel keen to
accelerated a planned nuclear exit after the accidents in
Japan
's
Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
