International donors have pledged EUR550 million to fund the
construction of a new shelter over the stricken reactor at Chernobyl nuclear
power plant, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said Tuesday at a conference
marking the 25th anniversary of the world's worst nuclear accident.
Yanukovych said it was a "preliminary figure" for the pledges from
international organizations and foreign governments, and
Ukraine
was
still waiting for concrete answers from some countries.
The president said that
Ukraine
would
also give EUR29 million to the fund. This together with the international
pledges however falls short of the EUR740 million needed to complete the
shelter and other projects to make the site safe.
The conference in
Ukraine
's
capital
Kiev
Tuesday, which brought together leaders from European Union and Group of Eight
countries, has been given added impetus by the ongoing crisis at the
Fukushima
nuclear plant in
Japan
.
The huge new shelter will be completed in 2015 and slid over the current
"sarcophagus," a concrete structure hastily thrown around the reactor
after it exploded on
April
26, 1986
.
