China
will
likely face an electricity shortfall of about 30 gigawatts this summer--and the
supply gap could expand further if temperatures soar and thermal coal supplies
become tight, the China Electricity Council said.
China
will
likely add 85 GW of new power generation capacity this year, the council said
in a report on its website Thursday.
The forecast has been revised lower from 90 GW earlier this year, as investment
in thermal power plants is lower than previous estimates, in line with the
government's efforts to restructure industry, it said.
Total installed generating capacity could reach 1,040 GW by the end of this
year, it said, adding that it is maintaining its forecast of total power
consumption for this year at 4.7 trillion kWh.
