Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russia could partner in the Arctic with Royal Dutch Shell PLC ( RDSA) after a share swap and oil exploration agreement with BP PLC ( BP) collapsed last week.

Putin said BP could still manage to work its way back into a deal with Russia 's state-held oil company OAO Rosneft (ROSN.RS).

But asked if Shell could replace BP in the deal, Putin replied: "It could."

"We feel entirely comfortable with them as a partner," news agencies quoted Putin as saying.

His comments came only days after Shell Chief Executive Peter Voser met in
Moscow with the head of Rosneft and Igor Sechin, Putin's top energy assistant who orchestrated the original BP agreement.
