An Iranian deputy oil minister and his delegation came under attack in Baghdad Wednesday but were unharmed and able to clinch a gas oil contract, Iraqi and Iranian official sources said.

Attacks on energy-related targets are common in
Iraq , but it may be the first time top oil delegates from neighboring Iran have been caught in such an incident.

"An Iranian delegation headed by Mr. Ali Zeighami [deputy oil minister in charge of refining] that came for the dialogue to export fuel to Iraq" was shot at by gunmen on his way to the electricity ministry, the Iranian oil ministry's news agency, Shana, said on its website.

A spokesman for the Iraqi electricity ministry confirmed the attack on the delegation led by Zeighami, who is also managing director of the National Iranian Oil Refining And Distribution Co.

The Iranians, who were unharmed, were later able to sign a contract with the Iraqi electricity ministry for the supply 1.5 million liters of gasoil a day, the Iraqi spokesman said.

The supplied gasoil will be enough to fuel 250 megawatts, he said.

Iran last year started exporting refined products, including to Iraq , after boosting its capacity in response to sanctions against its downstream sector.

Iraq hosts militants from a group seeking the overthrow of Iran 's Islamic regime, the Mojahedin-e-Khalq Organization, though there are no allegations so far that they could have been involved.
