An "unknown" oil sheen covering an estimated 10,000 square yards was spotted Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico near BP PLC's (BP) Marlin oil platform, according to a government document made public Thursday.

BP "reported a sheen that is believed to be from an [pollution system]
point but is not confirmed yet," according to the company's filing with
the
National
Response
Center
.
A BP representative was not immediately available to comment on the document.
The Marlin platform is about 125 miles southeast of
New
Orleans
in 3,240 feet of water. It can process about
60,000 barrels a day of oil, according to BP's Web site.
