Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501.TO) said Friday that it is forecasting
electricity demand in its service area will hit 74.68% of available capacity
between Aug. 20 and Aug. 26, well below peak usage levels recorded earlier this
week.
The utility commonly known as Tepco said that it expects power capacity during
the period to stand at 55.30 million kilowatts, exceeding anticipated maximum
demand of 41.30 million KWs.
Expected power capacity on average was lowered from 56.00 million KW previously
foreseen, due partly to maintenance of a thermal power generator and a decision
to push back installation of an extra gas turbine at another thermal power
plant.
The outlook for power demand was also revised down from 55.00 million KWs in
the prior outlook due to an anticipated drop in temperatures and energy saving
activities.
On Thursday, electricity demand in Tepco's service area reached 49.22 million
KWs, making up 90.14% of supply and crossing the 90% threshold for the first
time since July 1. The temperature in
Tokyo
hit
36.1 degrees Celsius, a record high for this summer.
