The chairman of Edison SpA (EDN.MI) said Wednesday that talks about the future of the Italian utility company are starting now, Italian wire MF-Dow Jones reported.

Giuliano Zuccoli, the chairman of the utility company that is jointly controlled by a group of Italian utilities and French energy company Electricite de France (EDF.FR), didn't exclude the possibility that other utilities could be involved in the talks.

On Monday, Industry Minister Paolo Romani and the head of EDF, Henri Proglio, met in Milan and decided to postpone an existing shareholders pact to Oct. 15 from Sept. 15, to give talks over the future of the Italian utility more time to reach a deal.

Separately, Graziano Tarantini, a shareholder in
Edison , said a possible break-up of some assets, like Edipower, wasn't an issue, adding it would be the best solution.
