A deal allowing the transit of natural gas to the European Union through Turkey via the proposed Nabucco pipeline should be signed in July, E.U. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said Tuesday.

The European Commission and those E.U. countries involved in the 3,300-kilometer-long pipeline project have had lengthy negotiations with Turkey on the terms of the deal.

The Nabucco project will pave the way for E.U. imports of Central Asian gas, relieving the bloc's dependence on Russian imports.
