State giant Saudi Arabian Oil Co., known as Saudi Aramco, has controlled a leak at its Safaniya oil field, the world's largest offshore field, sources familiar with the matter said Thursday.

The spill, which lasted for a few days, had no impact on the field's output, one official told Zawya Dow Jones.

The leak has stopped and what they are doing now is "drawing the oil out from the water," according to a second official.

Safaniya is located about 265 kilometers north of Aramco's headquarters in Dhahran in the
Persian Gulf and has an output capacity of more than 1.2 million barrels per day. Saudi Aramco was not available to comment on the leak.

The firm has previously said it plans to upgrade the oil field to maintain the maximum capacity of the Arabian heavy crude.
