Russian state-run gas company Gazprom OAO (GAZP.RS) said Monday it would boost its supply of gas to Turkey by 60% following an explosion on the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline that halted natural gas shipments from Iran and disrupted flow from Azerbaijan .

Turkey 's state-owned pipeline company Botas requested an increase in gas volume to 48 million cubic meters per day from 30 million cubic meters a day, the company said.

Gazprom said it would try to meet the demand if "technically possible." Earlier Monday,
Iran 's state-owned National Iranian Gas Co. said it was halting supply due to an incident on the pipline.

Last week, BP Azerbaijan said it was redirecting flow around the same pipeline. Azeri news agency Trend reported that the Turkish section of the pipeline transporting Azerbaijani gas to
Turkey was attacked, citing the Turkish energy ministry.

Eastern Turkey is home to a Kurdish insurgency and the pipeline has suffered regular explosions in recent years.

There has also been mounting tensions in the border region between
Turkey and Syria , with both sides trading fire in recent days as the civil war threatens to embroil its neighbor.
