State-run Korea Gas Corp. (036460.SE) has been selected as preferred bidder for gas exploration in Cyprus , a spokesman for the South Korean company said Monday.

It was selected along with lead partner ENI S.p.A. of Italy, the spokesman said by phone without elaborating.

The Korea Economic Daily earlier Monday reported that Kogas will have a 20% stake in the
Cyprus exploration-and-development project which will give the South Korean gas utility access to an estimated 60 million tons of natural gas.

Discovery of offshore natural gas has reignited tensions over the divided island.
